Rara Lake camping Trek

Rara lake has the distinction of being the largest lake in Nepal. The area surrounding the lake was declared a National park in 1976 but despite that the lake still receives relatively few visitors, mainly due to its isolation.
While the lake is the obvious focal point of the park there is some well preserved forest and an abundance wildlife to be found in the surrounding protected area. The lake itself is situated 2990meters above the sea level but with in the park there is a high point, Chuchemara Peak, which at 4039 meters elevation, provides a spectacular view point.

This remote and rugged protected area is both scenically and culturally attractive. It is the habitat of various rare and endangered plant and wildlife species many of which can be seen nowhere else in the country. Animal species of particular interest in the national park are populations of snow leopard, grey wolf and blue sheep.

The people are a mixture of ethnic groups, such as the Magar, Gurung and hill people of Hindu caste origin. Of particular interest are the Thakuri, the royal family caste. Again they are quite different in culture and language to their cousins further east.
